Royal Oak, MI
I had just returned back to my parent’s house after 8 months of being on the road. In that time I followed Dead & Co, had lived at/worked at many different organic farms, ranches, an ashram, and camped and lived out of my car in the days between. It was just before Christmas. I had interviewed for a new job on my way back home in Detroit. A few days after arriving home, I got a call saying that I had gotten the job to be a Brewer at a Detroit brewery. Kind of convenient because I didn’t have to pack anything since all my belongings were still in suitcases. I moved in on January 19 2024– my 26th birthday. My folks drove across the state with me in a winter storm to help me move into my tiny 300 sq ft studio apartment close to downtown Royal Oak. It was the first time being able to live on my own in my adult life. Everything felt new and exciting. I was proud of myself for being able to make it happen. I lived there for about 2.5 years. It was a really formative time in my life. I’ve always known I’ve enjoyed being on my own, and having a place that was completely mine was a treat. I would recommend it to anyone who can manage it. It was easy for me to walk to the local farmer’s market, I had beautiful running routes right outside of my apartment complex, and a really small, but lovely (and practical) kitchen. Some of my favorite memories are of me having a quiet night in— cooking a good meal after a long run. Or having a glass of wine on my patio while waiting to meet up with friends on the town. It was a simple life with a quick easy commute to my job at the time (it was less than a mile from my apartment). Thanks Apt 212!!!
